1st Lieutenant Clovis T. Ray rose above severe economic challenges in his youth to become an outstanding student athlete at Three Rivers High School (’95). He then went on to excel on the football field and in the classroom at Macalester College, a prestigious private institution.
At the age of 32, his courage and patriotism led him to leave a comfortable and lucrative banking career to join the U.S. Army. A born leader, he advanced quickly through the military ranks and was deployed to Afghanistan to lead his platoon during Operation Enduring Freedom.
From the moment he arrived, his charisma and infectious optimism inspired his men and boosted morale during a very difficult deployment. He was killed in action in the Kunar Province on March 15, 2012.
This scholarship is given annually to student athletes who embody the characteristics Clovis lived by --- courage, leadership, and dedication to excellence. Our goal is to help give these students the opportunity to obtain a college education which they otherwise may not be able to afford.
